Are these kids the youngest food waste warriors in the UK?

A group of entrepreneurial children from West London are fighting food waste by selling surplus food in the school playground and to the local community.

The initiative is led by 400 children aged 5 to 12 year olds from Old Oak Primary School & Old Oak Community Centre in East Acton.   

They have named their social enterprise ‘Bubble & Squeak’, a nod to the traditional   English dish made using leftover vegetables. Emphasising healthy eating, their aim is to take edible surplus food such as fruit and vegetables from local businesses, markets and supermarkets and redistribute it to the local community on a ‘pay as you feel’ basis.  

The food waste epidemic sees 15 million tonnes of perfectly edible food is wasted in Britain every year.  Creative initiatives to fight food waste are sprouting up all over the globe. 

Since February 2017 the children have had remarkable success for their initiative. Our highlights:

Featured in Time Out Online gaining 87,000 + views

Featured in the  Metro Online with the title “The schoolchildren fighting food waste from their playground by selling wonky veg to parents”

Launched our successful crowdfunding campaign for a shipping container to store more surplus food.  The campaign exceeded its target, hitting £5,556.

Included in Crowdfunders favourite projects offering sustainable solutions to food waste.

Built network of volunteers including a collection arrangement once a week from Polytek (the UK’s leading International Building Services Company)

Won Business Launchpad Eco Business of the year 2017

Mayor of London City Pitch School Winners 

Saved in total an amazing est. 2,695 kg from landfill in just under 12 months.  That’s the same weight as an African Forest Elephant!

Forged partnerships with London’s biggest food waste charities such as City Harvest and Plan Z Heroes

Launched this Christmas their own wonky chutney to sell to support their social enterprise
